Posted by funfelt on Tuesday Apr 1, 2008 Under ScienceHi everyone! As you know I am a proud Story Time Felts consultant, and one of my team members gave me a great idea! Lisa Braverman held one of these on her Educational Toy Factory blog and it looked like fun!
Anyone who makes a comment on ANY of my posts on this blog in the month of April will be entered to win a precut and assembled Bug Book quiet book (in honor of Earth Day!) from me! Just comment on any post and I will choose a winner at the end of the month.

Click on the images to read about this great product in another window!
The Bug Book is one of my favorite felt activity books that Story Time Felts offers. It not only has 43 creepy crawly bugs and 5 different environments, it also comes with extensive paperwork explaining each bug, its habitat and other information. If you are a teacher or homeschooler, you will be able to create a unit for Spring around this great set. It is also on sale in April!
Let me know what you think in the comments or if you have any fun activities for kids related to BUGS!!
Happy posting, and good luck in the contest! Take a look around this blog, there are many fun activities for kids to try out!
I will contact the winner May 1st!
PS: Special shoutout to my Mompack friends! Thanks for visiting!

Hi Karen! You have lots of neat info here and helpful stuff for homeschoolers. Right now we are studying earth-friendly ways to live, which will lead into rainforests, plants, etc. Seeing your contest gave me an idea to incorporate “bugs.” We are talking about trash this week and will discuss how composted food, leaves, and grass clippings break down. Bugs! Stop by my blog and see our Earth Day activities during the month of April! http://www.stay-at-home-child.com

My 3-year-old son is totally obsessed with bugs right now! We like to borrow insect books from the library and go walk to the park. When we come across a bug, we look it up in the book to find out what each one is called!

Thanks everyone! One of the things I love most about this set is that it comes with ideas for activities you can do. When I get a chance I will share some here. It also has little drawings of each bug so you can identify them and tells a little more about them. My kids love playing with this one in the car! Another one that goes with the bug theme is Welcome to Farm Field it is one of our preschool units and there is a whole theme on worms and how they help us grow our food. It is here: http://www.funfelt.com/farmfun.html
Thanks for stopping by!

I am a librarian at an early childhood center and I use your ideas quite often. I love the idea of enough bugs to let all the children participate in the flannel stories. Thanks!

Thanks Victoria - I just heard that a lot of libraries this summer will be using a “bug” theme - is that true? We are about to come out with a large felt board version of the porch page shown above, I hope it works for people who want something bigger like in a classroom or library!!

I have been savoring the fun felt kits online for what seems to be hours now. I bumped into the website last year and tucked it away for a day like today when I can pour over the all of these colorful & creative felt pictures and stories. It really touched me to see that someone had taken it a step far beyond my own cutting and snipping to embrace a child’s fascination & concentration.
It is deeply rewarding to watch the contemplative moments as a child takes it all in~ you can see on their little faces they are thinking dimensionally when hearing the sound of your voice and either watching the felt figures being added or their sparkling enthusiasm as they participate and learn with such fervor placing felt pieces onto the board and being part of the story.
It is they who show us an intoxicating glee that is so rewarding. We all get such a lift ~ as this energy for learning unfolds!

This book looks like a lot of fun! Bugs are so much better when they are made out of felt instead of real ones. Very cute

Hi everyone - I came across a GREAT resource for a bug theme! The summer reading program at libraries just about everywhere this year is “Catch the Reading Bug” and the California Librarian’s Association has links to some great resources, and if you click on their workshops you can also get their handouts and craft ideas. Very cool resource!
